Your skin does not provide a complete barrier to protect against pathogens, chemicals and environmental exposures. Your skin can slow the absorption of and limit the penetration of some chemicals, but ultimately your skin is a primary pathway for absorption of nutrients and water.
Your choice is whether you choose nutrients that are natural (i.e. non-toxic and from nature) or chemical (synthetic and likely toxic).
Synthetic chemicals found in skin, hair, make up and personal care products have been linked to endocrine disorders, hormonal imbalances, cancer, dermatitis, infertility and miscarriages. Deceptive marketing is rife. Companies state that many of the “anti-aging” ingredients (chemicals) will decrease ageing and reduce wrinkles when in fact the opposite is the case. Chemicals cause oxidative stress ending up in our bloodstream and our internal organs, placing added stress on our body’s ability to detoxify and ultimately our decreases our liver’s inability to absorb vital nutrients from our food. Toxic substances end up in our body, leading to illness, allergies, inflammation, and disease.
For many, many centuries’ humans have relied on topical application of essential oils, minerals (such as clay), herbs, plants and water (seawater and mineral spring water) for health and wellbeing benefits. Everyday, in today’s world we are exposed to environmental toxins and we need to provide our bodies with as many natural and nutrient dense ingredients as possible, from both primary pathways – ingestion and skin absorption.
If you want healthy and youthful looking skin, ‘feeding’ your body topically with natural nutrient rich products over products which introduce toxins to your body (and the environment) is the way to go!
Note: Always check the labels on products. Just because a product says ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ doesn’t mean it is – it may only have one natural or organic ingredient and still be classed as “organic”. We need to change this practice, remove the deception that has become all-too-commonplace in supermarkets and on products that “green wash” pretending to be healthy, when in fact they aren’t.
